LO1: Animation Styles And Technques

Stop motion animation - Aardman

Aardman used Kudian Animate it software to create their stop motion animation. An advantage to using this software is that it is easy to use as all that is need is a camera and a button that captures the frames. A disadvantage to this is that the hardware is that it takes alot of time to create the characters out of plasticine and the software can only capture under a second.

Wallace And Gromit and Chicken Run and Shaun The Sheep

The medium genre for Aardman is film as their most popular creations also can be seen as adventure.

The genres mentioned appeal to the target audience as in terms of the film genre. This appeals to the target audience as it is longer than a usual program and will have a important narrative. The film Wallace And Gromit appeals to all genders and all ages. This because it is a family friendly animation. The design of the characters appeals to all ages as the characters aren't scary looking or inappropriate. Wallace And Gromit is part of the adventure genre is part of the traditional genre with the only difference being that the whole story is animated. The purpose of Wallace And Gromit and Chicken Run is adventure for the main characters this interesting all ages. To back this up there is no swearing and inappropriate behaviour. Also with Wallace And Gromit there is theme of Friendship between Wallace and his dog it teaches the audience on how important friendship is. Also the fact that Gromit, a dog, can stand up on his two feet and do humanely activities. Also with Shaun The Sheep the use of animals being the main character appeals to the young audience.

Hand drawn - Studio Ghibli

Various pencils and drawing tools are needed to make the anime which is then made in photoshop and put into animation software such Adobe Animate. The advantage to this is the design of this animation can be authentic and well designed. However a disadvantage can be it taking a while to design and then implementing into digital. Also the animation can only be 2d animation as well.

Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke

The medium genre for this studio is Anime, a 2d cartoon that is based around Japanese culture which can entail various storylines and subgenres within itself.

Films such as spirited away and My Neighbour Totoro appeal to a target audience that really enjoy anime films. These films will appeal to adventure films as anime has sub themes with adventure and sci fi. However the target audience must specifically like anime as that is a big factors in their films. In spirited away the main character goes to a abandoned supernatural theme park. This turns her parent to pigs. This appeals to the adventure genre and also the supernatural genre. This is because in real life there is no park for the supernatural because there are no supernatural beings. The main plot of the animation was for the main character to get her parent back and go home. This linking to the adventure genre as the 10 year old girl travels through all these locations meeting all these supernatural beings.

3D Animation - Pixar

The software need to make a Pixar animation is Pixar Renderman which allows to the creators to design the 3d model of the characters this meaning that they need a powerful computer to run these programs

Toy story and Cars and The Incredibles

The medium genre of these films are adventure and action. These genres all within these 3d animations.

The films like toy story appeal to mass audience that appreciate films like toy story. The appeals specifically to a younger audience as it family friendly and appropriate to kids. These films are adventure and sci fi. These hyper realistic 3d films makes the kids believe in toys coming to life this appealing to kids and parents as the contrast in colours through the HD animation can help them develop. The main plot of the story is jealousy between Woody and Buzz. This connotes an important lesson to be overcome with jealousy and be friendly. This appealing to a young audience who could take this as a good life lesson. Also to link to the supernatural genre of toy story. Every child has a toy to play with and in the film the toys come to life when no one is there appeals to a young audience with toys. This expanding their imagination. With Cars the surrealism aspect of cars being alive and having human emotions appeals to the younger audience. The Incredibles uses the superhero genre. Also appealing to the young audience because the superheroes are a family this links to the young people's family.

Aardman studios target a wider range of people when they make their films as their films are more family friendly and cater to a wider genre such as adventure. Also through their character design it appeals to most people as their characters can be human resembling similar features to most people. This making the British studio a more well rounded studio where any content can really be made. However in a Japanese Studio such as studio Ghibli they specialise in a culture that surrounds their country and make adventure adaptations and comedy adaptations through Anime. A specific cartoon that is popular around the world but still can be considered a niche genre as a certain of people watch it. A feature film such as Toy story has a higher FPS such as 30 FPS. The difference in FPS shows a difference in quality of the product. Higher FPS can be included in 4k and high quality animations which is made for the big screen instead of a TV show.

Narrative Ideas
My idea for my narrative is an inverted superhero story of Science Man. A story that shows him at the heights of his superhero career nearly defeating his enemy and saving loads of lives. During the celebrations he is hit by his enemy's secret weapon. This looses Science Man powers of flight and his knowledge that help him create his weapons. After this moment the temp of the story changes and he feels powerless as he feels invisible as the world is taken over by his enemy Fred Fink aka Captain Gaul. This ending on a cliff hanger as do we know if the world will end with no one to save it.

Audience Profile
My audience demographic for my animation will be around the age of 7 -16 as a superhero film appeals to a young audience because the superheroes and superpowers appeal to younger people because it has out of the ordinary qualities like a flight power and a power of speed. My audience like high paced action and mystery and a this story has a mystery with powers that are god given. This fantasy something my audience can get behind as they like animations because of the bright colours and detailed designs. My audience will appreciate the narrative and find the short story quite fun in a different way as it is a superhero story reversed that shows a different side to superheroes.

Final Idea And Narrative Justification
In my opinion the final idea I am wanting to animate is tied in with the genre of superheroes and fantasy because Science Man a man who has been give a superhuman brain that allows him to make these weapons of good, is supernatural and this can allow people get interested in it. The idea that science man is so great at the start and looses his powers and tries as best he can to help his home not be under the control of his enemy is a different approch to the traditional him gaining his powers and fighting crime. This I believe can be the unique selling point of my animation as we follow science man in his biggest test.

Treatment

Title - The Adventures Of Science Man

Genre - Superhero/adventure
I chose this genre as it appeals more to my target audience as it is supernatural and the hyperrealism appeals to kids as it appeals to their imagination. Also the adventure part of my genre for my animation is interesting throughout my animation. This contrasts with my target audience. The adventure genre entertains most people as the plot includes action.

Running Time- 3 Minutes
I have planned for my animation to be 3 minutes. My animation is this long because it falls under the title of a short film and appeals to the target audience. This duration could also be used in webisodes. This could be used on kids tv channels such as POP.

Target Audience - 7-16 years old aimed at all social grades
My target audience are kids in education learning science. This will help them in school and entertain them and hopefully get them to pursue a career in science. Also my animation includes the main hero glamorising science in a hyperrealism. This enhancing the imagination for the child as the use of science to stop crime is no real but is intriguing and makes want to replicate that in a way, that way being learning more science at school.

My Animation, "The Adventures Science Man" will be set in the city of London. In this city will be where Science Man lives and where he usually fights crimes from his all time enemy Captain Gaul. This city will include simple designs of buildings and skyscrapers. This setting being the overall setting for the whole story but slightly adjusted through out the story. The story will be begin with Science Man in mid battle with Captain Gaul. He seems to be winning his fight. Using his power of unbelievable knowledge and his chemical weapons. However suddenly Captain Gaul uses his secret weapon, a weapon never seen before. Gaul uses his weapon to make Science Mans powers disappear. Science Man with no powers to save the world.

SWOT Analysis

Strengths
The main strength of my idea is that it is a superhero story. The classic binary opposites of good and evil. Also adding the hyperrealism that acts as a way to entice the viewer. Superhero films are also very popular, with companies such as Marvel making a lot of revenue from their superhero films. Another strength of my idea is the use of a simplistic cartoon style. This makes my animation very easy to follow and appeals to a wide audience, including a younger audience. The use of science appeals to people who works with science. Also the education system as they teach science. This animation could be used as a education source in a bid to get kids interested in science. Another strength to my animation is that my animation is unique as it applies to the normal superhero conventions. However it is unique because the superpower is science which is not as conventional as flying or speed. This linking back to the education theme.

Weakness
The main weakness with my idea is the simplicity of my idea. The simple good evil storyline could be considered as boring and simple. Also the use of hostages could be considered inappropriate to a younger audience. However, if their is no violence then it should appropriate for a younger audience as it is animated.
Opportunities
An opportunity that can come from my idea is to use the Science Man idea in the education field as visual way to teach young people on how science is cool and is a good career in later life. However Science Man non fiction. This could lead to opportunities into other platforms such as making a Science Man game and a book for kids to read. I could expand my audience by having episodes that are directed to older people and ones older than the target audience as the episode can target them. This expansion will increase revenue.
Threats
The threats I would have would be other companies such as Marvel and other independent animation companies taking my ideas and design and profiting. To tackle this I would cover my work with watermark to avoid copyright abuse. The fact that I am a small animation company I could be considered vulnerable in comparison to Aardman. This could open me up to being exploited. When making a game. The game designers and the producers could exploit me into making the most revenue from the distribution.
